Originally from Manitoba, Canada, Mae Desmond has been living on Hawai’i and Maui since 2011.
After a vision while deep in the jungle, she set out to seriously pursue an art education and went on to study drawing, painting and impressionism under a prominent artist on the Big Island.
Bright and energetic, Mae paints in the alla prima style, often completing paintings in one sitting, with a particular love of plein air landscapes.
“One of my ways of communing with nature is to paint outdoors. I love the challenge of it, and the experience of really getting to observe a place. I feel so grateful there are so many beautiful spots to explore on this island.
At the same time, there’s this palpable energy on this island, something powerful and magical that comes from living on an active volcano.
The subject of destruction and transformation comes up frequently in my work, as much as growth and creation. It’s all part of the cycle.”
